1. Welcome to WallpaperArt. First of all thanks a lot for making this wicked wallpaper. Let’s start of with the most typical first question in an interview. Tell us a little more about yourself. How did you get involved in the graphic design scene?
Hi guys and thanks too for the feature! For most of you who don’t know me, my name is Rogier de Boevé, I’m 22 years old and I’m doing my third year of graphic design school. For me it started in my childhood when I was doodling ninja turtles characters! No seriously it started to interest me around the age of 17. The reason of my late passion with graphics was simply that I didn’t really know whether if I was any good at it or not. First I started making signatures for clans or just to show at other members. Then after a two years I got tired of the small canvas I felt I had the ability to create something interesting on a larger canvas. At this point I don’t see myself doing anything else and I hope to make into a profession in the future.
2. Most designers say: online communities and being active on them is pretty important for young designer’s growth. You’ve been in EvokeOne (one of the most successful design groups there is) quite a while now. How has it helped you improve your skills and grow as a graphic designer? What’s your opinion about this statement?
Yeah of course feedback always helps to improve your work, cause they have a fresh look on something you’ve worked on for days and they spot those faults you’ve overlooked quite easily. And it probably helps even more if it’s feedback from people who really know what they are talking about. Being a member of EVK also helps the productivity cause you’re in a certain way pushed to make new stuff for the group. And productivity is very important to learn. It’s always important to keep it at by doing it cause you lose these skills rather quickly if you don’t maintain these things.
3. We discover a lot of varied styles and techniques in your work. We’ve seen a lot of vector based artwork but also Photoshop doesn’t seem to scare you. What do you most enjoy making?
Well I started off in Photoshop back when I was making my first posters and even before that so in a way I’m going back to my roots. I’m not sure what I like the most cause both programs have their own qualities I like about them. I like to use them both. For me Illustrator CS leans more towards clean forms where Photoshop does a better job creating effects. To be really honest I love Photoshop a bit more cause it allows me more to tweak every little thing that bothers me.
4. Can you tell why a graphic designer should experiment more with several different styles and techniques instead of professionalizing in one only?
Of course It’s always important to be polyvalent. It’s good to have a broad range of qualities, certainly if professionally want to make success. So that’s why I’m trying to learn as much different styles that I can. It’s also because I’m generally curious how certain images are made and it’s fun to give it a go for myself. Not all styles go as good but that’s not important to me. If you keep experimenting with different styles you will eventually find your best and worst qualities and that also really important to know.

5. Now let’s get back to your wallpaper. What was your inspiration to make this truly wonderful digital art?
I based this wallpaper mainly on the feeling that I experience while listening to favorite tunes. I get the feeling that the music is shifting me into new forms slowly melting me into the music. The choice of a female character is intentionally an aesthetic choice that fits more with the beauty of music in general in my opinion. And besides that it’s also a new style for me so it’s of course an experiment that I enjoyed making and learned a lot from. It’s also helped me quit cigarettes!
Haha, that’s definitely a good thing!
