Matt Sypien Interview
Today we want to share an interview we did with this young upcoming graphic designer, Matt Sypien, we met on Facebook. Crazy right? Matt is a student born in Poland but now lives and studies in the UK. Matt who started in 2008, has already created some beautiful artworks. Make sure to check out his portfolio and show him some love after reading this interview. Enjoy!
1. Welcome to Wallpaper Art and please introduce yourself. Could you tell us where you’re from and how you got started in the graphic design scene?
Hey, I’m Matt and I was born in Krakow (Poland) but recently I live and study in UK. My journey with graphic design scene started in March 2008, when I designed my first personal piece and joined one of the social community portals for creatives. Soon after that I’ve became absolutely addicted to digital arts and whole range of software that help me to create my works.
2. You recently received some attention on behance because of your project with your hand made paper caps. What inspired you?
Haha, I’ve just woke up one day with idea to create them and that’s how it really started and the same day first concept was ready. I didn’t plan anything so every single model is just a spontaneous expression. I love the New Era caps and I’ve been wearing them since ages but I deserved to have my own pro models with the hope that someone will notice them and that what has happened. I’ve been invited by someone from New Era Europe for meeting in 2010 so fingers crossed
That’s amazing, let us know it went!
3. We really like it! You also made a cover for the MTV Insight book and worked on some concepts for Lacoste and PScreative. How did you experience these projects and what are your further goals as graphic designer?
When I was starting I thought it would be nice to land a job as a graphic designer, when I’ve actually got one I deserved to have a bigger impact into the projects that I’m working on and at the present I work as a creative director and lead designer for one of the UK’s agency, who knows what’s gonna be next, I live my life from day to day trying to inspire. I found MTV competition quite frustrating because this great agency from London that has announced it, decided to handle proper insight book design to someone else and that was my first serious clash with the real world of graphic design. Very disappointing to win the competition and pass all the privilege to someone else. I’ve got really good fun with Lacoste obviously because I could do whatever I want so it was one of my favorite briefs. The only one thing that I can say about publications is that whatever if it’s always nice to contribute. Whoever don’t know this feeling when you hold a magazine with your own feature should work harder because it will always make you happier.
That’s so true, We know how it feels! It’s amazing.
4. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
This is great question because I never know what to say. I may be running my own studio as well as work in TV production because of the tutors from BBC my course makes me very passionate about TV and post production as well. Time will definitely show, I don’t want to plan anything because everything goes too fast at the moment.
5. Throughout your experiences in graphic design, and other studies, what is the most important lesson you have learned? Why do you find it so important? And how do you apply it now to your art?
First of all you will never become a great graphic designer when you only talk about it. Its not me but I have to say it accordingly to the situation I can see on my Uni. People are chasing dreams rather than make them comes through but this is not possible without hard work. Competition is really strong and if you want to be noticed you have to put big impact and passion in that what you are doing. Talking about it won’t make you better so shhh and do something. Set the trends rather than follow them.

6. Can you tell us something more about your wallpaper?
Wallpaperart is project with the passion which provides high quality stuff for people. I’ve been working on my portfolio since a long time but I finally feel that I’m ready for it now. I want to launch it at the beginning of 2010 as new year brings always fresh start so stay tuned
