Stefan Lucut Interview
Today we want to introduce you a brilliant Romanian-based artist, Stefan Lucut. Stefan’s work is a mix of type, photography and vector elements, infused with a modern, contemporary feel. He mixes vibrant colors, serifed typography and primitive shapes to create imagery that is both bold and strong.
Despite the minimalist nature of his site, it does not take long to recognize the maturity and imagination that comes through in his work.
After our interview he was so kind to make an exclusive wallpaper for our readers. So show him some love, check out his amazing gallery and feel free to pick up the wallpaper. Have a nice read and get inspired by *Baubauhaus.
Welcome to WallpaperArt and please introduce yourself. Could you tell us where you’re from and how you got started in the field?
I am a 24 years old graphic designer from Timisoara / Romania and you know my name – Lucut – Stefan Lucut. I started this 4 years ago trying to make websites and logos but failed because coming from an Art High School I got other call. So I realize that I need to start illustrate more because this is what I love to do. At that time I also realize that this job is made with a lot of fun and passion and is important for me to not force myself into a field and just let it go.

Why did you want to become a graphic designer?
I first wanted to become an architect. But you know how architecture works, is hard to push your ideas in this field. It is a challenging land and I got all the respect for the people who practice this job.
So I searched at that time a job that could be fit to me. I didn’t want to become an artist for a single reason – I don’t know what an artist means. I found from the internet about this creative field and I quickly got into it through Depthcore. And I was doing this exclusively for fun. Depthcore is a place where we have a lot of fun and we experience a lot in to the graphics. Every chapter from Depthcore is an new exploration for all. So I build up an nice portfolio with pieces made just for fun and the first clients started to appear, and you can guess what happen… I found myself into this field called Graphic Design.

You are also one of the artists behind *Baubauhaus, can you tell us something more about it and what can we expect from *Baubauhaus in the future.*
I create *Baubauahus as a toy, my toy which I can scramble when I need and get new inspirational stuff from around the internet. Tumblr got an amazing platform that still suck on the open source chapter, but if you are smart enough you can use it as you want. This thing grew up really fast and I realize that I am not the only one who “scramble” *Baubauahus and out there are now over 5000 followers who waits to refresh the page every day. Now we are 5 people involved in this project including a Super-Hero-Programmer who deal with all the Tumblr stuff. We are planning to improve navigation and filter search, so in the future you’ll be able to browse only photography or only design, which I think would be a cool way to find your sources of inspiration. This is the main feature that we want to launch this summer, the rest of them you should check them by yourself visiting the site.

Next to being an incredible inspiring designer, you also do workshops. Please share some lovely experiences with us.
This started one year ago when I got invited by Ovidiu Hrin to join him to Vienna Design Week and do together an experimental Lab in to the Schaulabor section. I must tell you that we got a lot of fun and a great experience in that entire week of work, things which at the end push us to go forward and accept the upcoming offers that we got. So since then we’ve been involved in other 3 workshops in Romania. I said “we” because we are with two into this. Two because the “theater” that we create together makes the people feel comfortable and fun and two opinions on the same line are more than a single one right? So workshops are a great exchange boutique. We “sell” they “buy” but the reverse thing exist too where they “sell” we “buy”. I need to be a teacher.

Is there any crucial tips you’ve told in all your workshops?
All workshops are build around this quote belongs to David Carson;
Graphic design will save the world, right after rock and roll does.
You’ve made this beautiful wallpaper “Cosmo″ for our readers, can you tell us something more about it.
I don’t read much I must say this. So I was always ashamed when I meet graphic designers and they always talk about what great books did they read and bla bla and I am most of the time off topic (most of the time because when they talk about The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger I am right there debating the book) and I think is cool to read books and I guess you can get inspired from there and so on and so far, but I simply don’t have the patience. But I recently found this quote “I never read, I just look at pictures” belongs to Andy Worhol which makes me more brave and not to be ashamed again. Of course is not true. I guess Andy was into this – reading all kind of books.
Now I don’t know why I told you this, because now I need to force this story to be related to my wallpaper. So let’s put them together. That’s me right there (or anybody else who thinks is me) wearing that astronaut helmet witch represent my knowledge about graphic design through images. The face express me looking at something, not reading, just look at that face and think about it, doesn’t he look at something and he is so stunned about it, he loves that thing and he wants that thing – whatever that is.
…..hmmmm ok I don’t want to bullshit you anymore, let’s face it – is just a wallpaper looking good…or is not….the story above could be true? See this is the beauty of graphic design could be anything behind it, but what matter is what inspires inside you when you look at it. We are able to connect two things together so at the end those two things will be one, but we can not force them to be one. So if you can see two things into this piece then it works if not send your reclamation on my email and I’ll see what I can do for you. Here art and graphic design are on the same line.
